South Africa was an amazing experience for me. It was my introduction to Africa and of what was to come when I finally reached my destination, which was Manica Mozambique. I spent the first week hanging out around Johannesburg. I took a tour of the city and learned a lot on how it came up to be the city it is today. I met a man called Doc, he is one of the most generous people I’ve met. He made us feel at home the entire time we were with him. He took us to two different favelas outside of Johannesburg. We coaches and played with the kids from those areas. It was such an eye opening experience for me. There were kids that didn’t have shoes play football with. It made me grateful/embarrassed that when I was a kid to always have shoes, but I would complain when I play football in normal shoes. These kids just wanted to play they didn’t even have shoes to wear and yet were out there playing on a pitch that wasn’t great at all, that had broken glass and litter around it. Yet they were all smiling and excited to be there with us. That’s something I’ll never forget in my life. I wish I could have done more for the kids than just have a session for them. Seeing them smile and have fun during my session was priceless. My time in South Africa was coming to an end, and in that small time I spent there it changed me a bit.
